Please find below the rubric for the core values essay. This is what the judges will be using during deliberations to judge the teams.
As a reminder here is the process:
Letter of Invitation
In the true spirit of FLL Core Values, where "what we discover is more important than what we win," Colorado FIRST LEGO® League wants to hear what you discovered this season. Because you demonstrated FLL Core Values and great teamwork at a regional qualifier or at the Championship Competition, you are invited to submit an essay to tell us your story.
This invitation is being sent to teams who earned one of these awards – Teamwork, Gracious Professionalism, Spirit, Community Involvement, Judges’, and Director’s – and some teams that were nominated by their teamwork judges at a qualifying event.
not given at the Championship event, but instead will be given no later than January 31, 2010, to this incredible team. Additional information including the rubric will be posted on the Colorado FIRST LEGO® League website by January 4, 2010.
The FLL World Festival "Smart Move" event will take place in Atlanta, Georgia from April 14th - 17th, 2010. World Festival is just that -- a festival and showcase celebrating the accomplishments of FIRST LEGO® League teams from around the globe.
Colorado FIRST LEGO® League will submit the essay of this team who wins the 2009 Championship Judges’ award to the FLL World Festival Values Committee, and as a result will be considered in another judging process for the opportunity to be invited to attend the FLL World Festival.
Required Elements:
· An essay written by the team members answering questions how they have demonstrated FLL Core Values in team meetings, outside their team meetings and at FLL Tournaments. An adult may type the responses but editing is not permitted. The essay cannot exceed 500 words, and should be in 12-pt font. The team/coach contact information should be on a separate cover letter.

FLL Core Values are defined as:
• We are a team.
• We do the work to find the solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.
• We honor the spirit of friendly competition.
• What we discover is more important than what we win.
• We share our experiences with others.
• We display gracious professionalism in everything we do.
• We have fun!
Gracious Professionalism
Dr. Woodie Flowers, FIRST National Advisor and Pappalardo Professor of Mechanical Engineering,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, coined the term "Gracious Professionalism." Gracious Professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST. It's a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process. They avoid treating anyone like losers. No chest thumping tough talk, but no sticky-sweet platitudes either. Knowledge, competition, and empathy are comfortably blended. In the long run, Gracious Professionalism is part of pursuing a meaningful life. One can add to society and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing one has acted with integrity and sensitivity.
